This sculpture of the Roman goddess of agriculture, Ceres, sits atop the Chicago Board of Trade building. Carrying a sheaf of wheat and bag of grain, she is a fitting and symbolic choice for the building that houses one of the world's busiest grain markets. This striking woodblock print entitled Before the Mirror (1916) is the work of Ito Shinsui (Japanese, 1892-1972), one of the most significant artists of Japan's Shin Hanga ("new print") movement.
