AAF, Fall, NYC, October 2012

The third editon of a FALL Affordable Art Fair, New York City, successfully concluded earlier this month with visitor attendance topping 9,500 and artwork sales topping $1.6 million. This stand alone art fair, is unique because it's offerings are in the more reasonable price ranges, starting at $500 and going no higher than $10,000. This exhibition was an opportunity to view and purchase original, contemporary painting, sculpture and photography offered by local, national and international galleries. It was located at "The Tunnel" in West Chelsea, NYC in the heart of the Arts District, which seemed to increase the turn-out and sales momentum. The FALL Affordable Art Fair New York City was held over a four day period, had 60+ galleries participating and showcased the work of living artists, only.

The artist has photographed hundreds of images of the word Hotel from signage around the world. He sells them individually and sometimes creates groupings or installations.

Nadal is a French artist showing at 31 Galerie in Toulouse, France.He is an oil painter working on canvas, although paint is his medium, his process is more like drawing, sometimes with ridged and computer like lines and sometimes with lose scribbles or flowing lines. I found these pieces to be a pleasure for the eyes.

Anelle Gandelman Fine Art - Gail Resen - Acrylic paint on cut and manipulated canvas.

Anelle Gandelman Fine Art, artist: Gail Resen, medium" Painted and Manipulated canvas. The famous artist Lucio Fontana was known for fusing sculptural elements with painting by creating solid colored canvases and then slashing or puncturing the surface in order to reveal the space behind the picture. Usually his works were one simple slash in the middle of the canvas. Above, artist Gali Resen takes his concept a step further by evenly cutting her canvases to create a pattern which is then twisted to form even more intricate pattens and also to reveal the space behind the painting as well. Rather than being inspired by Fontana the artist comes to painting from a background in weaving and that was her point of departure.

Duncan Johnson received a Pollack Krasner Foundation Artist Grant in 2012 and has a BFA from Pratt. Johnson has been working with wood his whole life, mostly as sculpture. This series is a departure, being 2-dimensional works constructed out of found bits of wood which he mills, paints and assembles into a construction of geometric color and design. Many a late night conversation has turned to the possibility of our past lives - these woods have all had past lives, some obviously had hard and long existences. Johnson's wood paintings are "combines" much like a Rauschenberg "combine".

Mara Claus

gallery juliane hundertmark, Berlin / Mara Claus - Mara Claus is a young artist from Germany. Her work makes many experiments with color, materials and historic scientific papers and materials.

She often creates abstract landscapes with explanations about the environment, the temperature, the growing of plants and the study of humans and animals.

She studied Biology and Mathematics before turning to art so she combines pieces of old biology books with written out mathematical equations, plus her paintings and drawings. Her works is very intuitive and her drawings simple.

The artist Mara Claus lives and works in Berlin, Germany and is exclusively represented by gallery juliane hundertmark, Berlin.

The AAF also annually hosts art fairs in: Amsterdam, Bristol, Brussels, Hamburg, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Milan, Singapore, Seattle, Stockholm and Rome. Next April the will bring their spring version of AAF to New York City.

"Calas"
Old School
NOLA Rice Balls

During the 19th century, horse-drawn carts in the streets of New Orleans sold wonderful, aromatic rice cakes (balls) called Calas. For quite a while now, they have not been widely available in N.O. restaurants. They make a great breakfast, side dish or dessert.

INGREDIENTS

1 1/2 cups cooked rice

1 1/2 cups flour

1 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/8 tsp salt

1/8 tsp nutmeg

3 eggs, beaten

2 Tsp milk

1 tsp vanilla

Cooking oil

Powdered Sugar

DIRECTIONS

Mix rice with dry ingredients.

Add eggs, milk, and vanilla, and mix well

Shape into 2" balls

drop into hot oil and fry until brown.

Drain onto paper towels.

Sprinkle with powdered sugar

Makes about 12 balls

for OVERNIGHT production:

mix a cake of yeast with a little water and several cups of cooked rice.

cover and refrigerate overnight

In morning, mix the other ingredients, except the baking powder

Fry and Serve with cafe au lait.

the yeast makes them more flavorful.

Louise Fishman is an Abstract Expressionist painter, who first began her study of painting in the late 1950's and has been exhibiting in galleries and museums since the 1960's. She currently has a show of works from 2010 - 2012 up until Oct. 27, 2012 at Cheim & Read.

Most of these works were inspired by a trip she took to Venice, Italy. Reminiscing, she paints, the blues, greens, ivory and browns she saw there, representing Venice's sky, water, architecture, pedestrian streets, canals, boats and people. In these current works Louise Fishman uses broad swathes of color, often organized in loose geometric patterns. Most pieces have thick residual paint at the edges of the strokes and in some you will even find large "globs" of paint used as elements within the paintings. She uses brushes and found objects to apply or scrape the paint.

Fishman was born in Pennsylvania in 1939 into a family of painters and she studied at many of the prestigious art schools of Philadelphia before getting her masters degree from the University of Illinois. Recently she was in the news because of her marriage, last summer, to Ingrid Nyeboe, a graphic designer. The artist lives and works in New York City.

Today you will find many other artist working in an Abstract Expressionist style, but Fishman is different, she was on the outside edge of and is connected at the hip to the original New York Abstract Expressionist movement. If I could buy one of her works, I certainly would!

French Bread Crustini

This appetizer, or "morning, noon & night" snack, is as easy as it is wonderful.

Buy some 6" French bread loafs and slice them into 3/4" rounds. 

Place some foil on a cookie sheet, spray with oil.

Put the rounds onto the foil and spray the tops with oil.

Sprinkle some garlic powder and Cajun or other peppery seasoning on the bread.

Toast under the broiler for a very few minutes, check after one minute. You want the tops to be brown, not burned.

Remove and sprinkle with some parsley flakes.

Serve with a creole sauce as a dip or any sauce or dip you want. They are also great by themselves and as bread with food.

The Affordable Art Fair (FALL EDITION 2012) Special Issue #1- Richard Kurtz's (Basquiat like) Boxer Series + Dr. Fuhrman’s Green Longevity Drink

Richard Kurtz's Boxers

If you missed the boat with Basquiat consider an original boxer painting by artist Richard Kurtz.

I came across Richard Kurtz's "Boxer" images this past weekend in NYC (at AAF, Buenos Aires Open Art {www.HoyArteHoy.com.ar}). His crudely painted art has many of the same elements that make a Jean-Michael Basquiat a "Basquiat" and yet these boxer images, which dominate his work, are uniquely his own. Kurtz's works are painted on found objects and go from credit card sized, 2" x 3"; to paintings on found book pages; up to larger pieces painted on discarded wooden boards. 

Kurtz, who now lives in New Mexico, is an expatriated New Yorker. I was expecting to find a young black man when I did the research for this article - instead I found the artist to be a mid-career, white, rock and roll musician type. No matter, Kurtz has the soul of a young black man, working within the war society has assigned to him, fighting the good fight, taking punches and delivering them.

Dr. Fuhrman’s Green Longevity Drink
Made in a Vita Mix Blender

It'’s a “blended salad”—, a combination of raw, leafy greens and whole foods blended into a creamy consistency. When we simply chew a salad, about 70 to 90 percent of the plant cells are not broken open. As a result, most of the valuable nutrients contained within those cells never enter our bloodstream.” So, while Fuhrman still likes “chewed salads,” he thinks blended salads are a better way to maximize the intake of those nutrients.”

Fuhrman suggests drinking two glasses of his Longevity Drink daily. “

Ingredients:

1 large head romaine lettuce
1 1/2 cups spinach
2 sprigs parsley
1 cup broccoli florets
2 leaves mustard greens or turnip greens or Kayle
3 collard leaves
1/2 cup watercress
1/8 tsp. oregano
1/2 avocado
1 banana, peeled
3 large strawberries
1 cup frozen or fresh blueberries
1/2 papaya or mango
1 1/2  tsp. flax seeds
1 1/2  tsp. sunflower seeds
1 1/2  tsp. sesame seeds

1. Place 1/2 cup water into blender, adding ingredients, one by one, and blending until liquefied.

2. Pour 1 cup of Dr. Fuhrman’s Green Longevity Drink into glass, adding water and stirring until desired consistency is reached. Store remainder in an airtight container and refrigerate.

Makes 4 cups
