BOOK: Shovel in a Hole
Shovel in a Hole includes over two-hundred images of the Swiss artist Urs Fischer’s work, and features essays by Massimiliano Gioni, Jessica Morgan, and Bice Curiger. This catalogue is published in conjunction with Fischer’s solo exhibition at the New Museum, "Urs Fischer: Marguerite de Ponty", curated by Massimiliano Gioni. Best known for his unexpected transformations of everyday objects and his lack of allegiance to any one style, Fischer consistently projects a sense of transience and existential uncertainty. This catalogue is an indispensible resource, including installation views and studio shots that cross-reference Fischer’s thought processes. Shovel in a Hole was conceived by designer Scipio Schneider in close collaboration with the artist. Edited by Massimiliano Gioni, text by Massimiliano Gioni, Jessica Morgan, Bice Curiger.

TIFFANY, LAPIS
PENDANT NECKLACE
Metropolitan Museum, Item# 80-011588
Because of its deep color, lapis lazuli was a stone that Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, 1848–1933), one of America’s most noted decorative artists at the turn of the twentieth century, incorporated into many of his works. Our exquisite necklace has been adapted from a group of finely crafted Tiffany pieces (ca. 1910–15) lapis lazuli. 1907, art jewelry designed by Tiffany was made at the workshops of Tiffany & Co., where production was supervised by jeweler Julia Munson. Only a few hundred pieces of art jewelry were made under Louis Tiffany, which were notable for innovative use of semiprecious stones.

Hamilton / Burr
Dueling Pistol
PIN
New York History Museum
Item # 19269
Price: $9.95
Metal lapel pin measures approximately 1 1/2" long x 1/2" high
Until the mid-1800s, men from all walks of life (including many of America's most important citizens) fought in "affairs of honor". The main purpose of a duel was to allow the participants to prove that they were willing to die to defend their honor. On July 11th, 1804, Aaron Burr challenged Alexander Hamilton to a duel that would become the most famous one fought in American History.
Hamilton and Burr had long been political rivals, and Hamilton had publicly opposed Burr's career for fifteen years. In 1800, Hamilton's role in ensuring the subsequent selection of Jefferson as President in preference to Burr may be seen as a turning point in their bitter relationship. In 1804, Burr sought the New York governorship and lost, due in part to Hamilton's active campaigning against him. Based on such attacks on his political honor, Burr challenged Hamilton to "meet at Weehawken" where he fired the fatal shot, Hamilton died the next day.

It is also seen as an accessory in many of the Eameses’ photographs.

The original House Bird was included in the exhibition, California Design, 1930–1965: “Living in a Modern Way,” organized by LACMA. - Made of solid alder, black lacquer finish, steel wire - 10-3/4 x 3-1/2 x 11 inches. Photo by Marc Eggimann, © Vitra

FOOD:
Christmas Brunch

Cranberry Champagne Cocktail
Eggs Benedict
Steamed Asparagus
Assorted Boxed Chocolates
One of the measures of a good cook is their ability to poach eggs to perfection and I think the best presentation of poached eggs is Eggs Benedict. The go-to vegetable for any special meal is asparagus and "the" drink for a celebration is Champagne. A box of "Whitman's Sampler" was always under the Christmas tree at our house growing up, so for me, a piece of chocolate makes the perfect finish for this classic Christmas brunch!

Cranberry Champagne Cocktail
Pour 1/3 of the glass with Cranberry Juice, fill the remainder with the Champagne of your choice.
Eggs Benedict
Each Portion: One egg poached, One slice of Smoked Ham (cut into a round), One half of a toasted English Muffin, Hollandaise Sauce.
To Poach an Egg: Bring 3 inches of water and a good splash of white vinegar to a boil in a sauce pan. Break each egg into a cup and slide into the water, spacing the eggs apart. Turn down heat to simmer and poach for 2 to 3 minutes. The eggs will not be "fully cooked" but will have the whites 99% done and the yolks must stay uncooked and runny. Remove eggs one at at time, with a slotted spoon and drain briefly on a paper towel.
Lightly toast the English Muffins. Cut the pre-sliced smoked deli ham into a round slightly smaller than the muffin's top.
Make the Hollandaise Sauce: (for two) Put 3 egg yolks in a small sauce pan, add a shake of cayanne pepper and sqeeze 1/2 lemon into the sauce pan (no seeds!). Melt 1/2 a stick of butter just until it has no solids. Using a whisk, whisk the eggs, lemon juice and cayanne until creamy, put over a flame and slowly pour the butter in as you continue to whisk. Every 10 seconds or so take the pan off of the flame and keep whipping. When the sauce thickens and before the yolks cook, pour the sauce into a dish to stop cooking and for serving.
Assemble the Eggs Benedict: Put a muffin on the plate, place a round of smoked ham, put a poached egg in the middle of the ham and then ladle on the hollandaise. Sprinkle a very little cayanne or paprika on top of sauce for effect.
Trim, steam and place the Asparagus on the plate with the Eggs Benedict and serve with the Champagne and or coffee.
Assorted Boxed Chocolates
Whitman's Sampler of assorted chocolates are available across the USA in most groceries, pharmacies and big box retailers.
