Venice Biennale, the World's Fair of Art, Opens June 4 + Ballpark Food

The collabrative performance art team of Allora & Calzadilla, from Puerto Rico,
will represent the USA at the 2011 Venice Biennale. Above their prop for:
“Stop, Repair, Prepare: Variations on ‘Ode to Joy’ for a Prepared Piano”

ART
Coming Soon
The Venice Biennale
The Venice Biennale is one of the most prestigious contemporary arts festivals in the world, showing paintings, sculpture and architecture in pavilions from 70 nations, located in one of the most beautiful cities in the world - Venice, Italy. Art-lovers and the jet set crowd from around the world make a pilgrimage to the Biennale every two years.

The selection of the artist for the US Pavilion is a political process handled by our State Department. Even though most politicians would prefer to exhibit prints of themselves in front a fireplace with their dogs, they are usually persuaded to present art from America's stable of talented contemporary artists.

Click below for the The New York Times slide show link:
This year the U.S. choice was for Allora & Calzadilla, a team of performance artists who will represent several firsts for the USA at this fair: the first artists from the US Territory of Puerto Rico (Ms. Allora, 37, was born in Philadelphia, and Mr. Calzadilla, 40, was born in Havana but moved to Puerto Rican when he was a small child); the first time a performance artist has been chosen; the first time an artistic team has collaborated on the art; and one of the few times to have art which makes a strong statement of opinion (something most countries would never allow, but which represents one of America's most important advantages, our Freedom of Speech). Recent U.S. Venice Biennale exhibitions have been more restrained, ie: an edited retrospective of Bruce Nauman's work in 2009 and an installation on Black History prepared by Fred Wilson in 2003.

The US Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

Allora & Calzadilla were selected through the diligence of Lisa Freiman, the senior curator of contemporary art at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Starting after the last Biennale in 2009, Lisa asked Barbara Gladstone, the famous Chelsea Arts District dealer who represents the artists in the U.S., to introduce her to the pair. The meeting went well and Freiman started working on her 95 page proposal which was passed through a chain of Federal Advisory Committees for review, competing with proposals from other curators, before the final list of a few recommendations was sent on to the current administration for their selection or rejection. It is a wonder this process ever results in a selection.

Allora and Mr. Calzadilla have created six works for their performance pieces at the 2011 Venice Biennale's U.S. Pavilion (which is very much like a World's Fair pavilion). Four of the works will be: 1.) an upside down decommissioned 1945 tank, with an exercise treadmill mounted on the top, where US athletes will, at regularly scheduled times, run on the actual treads of the tank to exercise; 2.) Pipe organ pipes in a beautiful wooden case have been constructed above an ATM machine - as people check their balances or get cash, different musical melodies will sound on the pipe organ relating to every transaction or function of the ATM - the sound of commerce; 3.) A "bronze" statue reproducing Thomas Crawford’s classical female figure “Freedom Triumphant in War and Peace” will be improving her patina lying in her spa like tanning bed; 4.) A wooden recreation of American Airline's Business Class seats made for long flights, which convert into beds, will be used by gymnasts as a base for performing handstands and athletic feats of gymnastics. All of these works conjuring up associations and anxieties and the viewer's opinion completes the work of art. The performance aspect of this year's exhibition should draw huge crowds and all of these obtuse comments on contemporary society will create what art is supposed to create - a conversation with many different opinions.

Allora & Calzadilla are a couple who met in 1995 as college students studying abroad in Florence. They have been living and working together ever since. Their daughter, Isa, is 16 months old. Mr. Calzadilla works on the conceptual ideas and Ms. Allora works on the performance aspects of their projects. A show at the Tate Modern, London in 2003 put them on the artistic map.

In 2008 the artists created a performance piece for the Museum of Modern Art in NYC which continued for a month. “Stop, Repair, Prepare: Variations on ‘Ode to Joy’ for a Prepared Piano” In this work they removed the center strings and cut a hole in the top of a grand piano. They hired a musician to play "Ode to Joy" on the outside keys, in this reverse position, as he also pushed the piano on wheels around the room.
The Venice Biannale is a very prestigious honor for any artist and its seems we will always be surprised, challenged and often amused by the work of Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla.

press release: Allora & Calzadilla will create new site-specific works that will "analyze contemporary geopolitics through the lens of spectacular nationalistic and competitive enterprises such as the Olympic Games, international commerce, war, the military-industrial complex and even the Biennale itself".
The 54th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale will take place in 2011, directed by the art historian and critic Bice Curiger - UNITED STATES OF AMERICA Pavillion - Gloria by Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla - Commissioner: Lisa D. Freiman. Venue: Pavilion at Giardini - Preview: 1-2-3 June 2011 - Official Opening: 3 June 2011 - Opening to the public: June 4 through November 27, 2011  A list of all nations participating will be at the end of this posting. Information Sources: The Venice Biannale's official website, the New York Times article on the Biannale, and MoMA's website. http://www.labiennale.org/en/art/exhibition/54iae/

FOOD
Sports Stadium vendors
go over the top
It is baseball season and the boys of summer are giving America something to watch as a distraction from the heat. I came across this photo essay on what is being served at the sports stadiums around the country. Trust me, this is NOT health food, but it is like driving by a car wreck, you just have to look. These are the options at the sporting events and when nobody is looking and you're among friends, what the heck.
(AwesomeRobo!gets all of the credit for this list of Stadium Food served at a venue near you.

  • 1. Baltimore Orioles Birdland Dog
  •

  • As over the top as it gets, this hot dog is covered with charcoal grilled beef, potato hash, pepperoni, onion rings and tomato relish. This hot dog is about 3 courses in one.
  • 2. Cincinnati Reds Cheese Coney
  • A hot dog covered in special chili, a truckload of cheddar cheese, onions and mustard. My arteries are hardening at the sight of this delicious monster.

  • 3. Cleveland Indians Buffalo Mac And Cheese
    • The touch of Buffalo chicken elevates this to something nearly gourmet in comparison to other stadium foods.
  • 4. Colorado Rockies Rocky Mountain Oysters
    • This wins from a purely exotic standpoint. In case you didn't know what these nuggets of deep fried joy are, they are battered and deep fried bulls balls.
  • 5. Florida Marlins Paella
    • This Spanish rice and seafood dish is probably one of the last dishes you'd expect to be served at a ball game. Though super delicious, I have a hard time picturing someone eating this comfortably in a stadium seat.
  • 6. Detroit Lions Victory Knot
    • This is a behemoth 2 pound soft pretzel with three sauces covering all the flavor bases. Beer Cheese, spicy mustard and sweet cream cheese.
  • 7. Illinois Gateway Grizzlies Luther Burger
    • Despite being in a minor league, these guys take their stadium food seriously, serving a gut bending offering of a thick bacon cheeseburger encased in a Krispy Kreme donut bun. Far and wide this is considered to be Baseball's Best Burger!
  • 8. Memphis Redbirds BBQ Nachos
    • This signature item has helped the team secure a smattering of awards for the best concession. Take nachos, throw in some pulled pork shoulder, cheese and spices and you've got an award winner.
  • 9. Northwest Arkansas Naturals Funnel Dogs
    • The Naturals took two ballpark stables and Frankensteined them together, creating this sweet and savory deep fried corn dog substitute and its covered in powdered sugar to boot.
  • 10. Philadelphia Phillies The Schmitter
    • It makes sense that the home of the Philly cheese steak would want a kicked up version sold at their home stadium. In addition to rib eye, cheese, and onions, there is also tomatoes, salami and a special sauce.
  • 11. Pittsburgh Pirates Primanti Brothers Sandwich
    • Served at PNC Park is the famous Primanti Brothers sandwich. Your choice of meats and veggies consists of this thick sandwich, and is also always topped with French fries, coleslaw, and tomatoes.
  • 12. San Francisco Giants Cha Cha Bowl
    • San Francisco is known for it s food, so it makes sense that one of the dishes served at AT&T Park would be more involved than your standard fare hot dog. The Cha Cha Bowl is a salad made of shredded pork, rice, beans, pineapple and zucchini. It is vibrant and rather healthy compared to the usual stadium offerings.
  • 13. Seattle Mariners Garlic Fries
    • This item is incredibly popular at the Seattle Mariners' field, and its pretty common to smell the garlic wafting from rows away. The piping hot fries are served sprinkled with garlic and parsley.
  • 14. St. Louis Cardinals Portobello Fries and Toasted Ravioli
  • Regular ravioli (below) would be a tricky dish to serve at a game. But once toasted, they make the perfect finger and marinara dipping food. As well as the ravioli, they server another fried finger food: The Portobello fries (above) are coated in Italian breadcrumbs and Romano cheese. These fries are served with a lemon garlic aioli dipping sauce.
  • 15. West Michigan Whitecaps Fifth Third Burger
    • This is not a hamburger. This is an artery hardening monster consisting of 5 1/3 pound ground beef, salsa, chili, chips, and cheese - all stuffed into a massive bun. At 5,000 calories and a $20 price tag, this burger is not messing around.

I have to end with something more healthy, Asparagus with Garlic.
  • Clean some asparagus and cut off tuff part of stems. Place asparagus on a cookie sheet and add a sprinkling of salt, pepper and olive oil, mix to coat, then spread evenly. Peel some garlic cloves and add to the pan. Bake in the oven at 300 degrees, uncovered for 30 munutes. If the garlic is not soft, remove asparagus and cook garlic another 10 minutes at 400. You will enjoy a burst of flavor from both - delicious asparagus with soft and sweet garlic. Serve along side of scrambled eggs.
Until Later,
Jack
